The brief

Kunsthal Nord is four floors of identical board-marked concrete. Visitors couldn’t tell one level from another, and the lifts opened onto blank walls.

The hall wanted signs that respected the building instead of covering it.

The idea

Every level got one oversized marker painted straight onto the concrete, and every direction got one thin arrow. Nothing is lit and nothing is coloured, so the art stays the loudest thing in the room.

Thin arrow and the words To the museum on a concrete wall
Long tiled underground walkway with an overhead exit sign
Dark sign with a white arrow mounted on a concrete column

// Debrief

Help-desk questions about directions dropped by half in the first three months after opening.
